Following a discussion on the double chin, the next facial fat problem to look at is the problem of jowls. You know you have this problem if you have fat pockets underneath your jawline, beside your chin area. Many people mistake it for a double chin, but it isn't. Jowls do not occur right underneath the chin, rather to either side of it. Often, they are accompanied by a double chin, but sometimes they are not.
Jowls can be caused by the same reasons that cause a double chin, such as being overweight, rapid weight loss, genetics (though rare), or the most common cause: age. Because the first three causes were already discussed in detail in the double chin section, we will not discuss them again. Instead, we will focus on how advancing age causes jowls.
As we get older, the fat pockets on either side of our jawline become plump and gently sags, causing jowls. Slowly, the older you become, the fat is lost and only the sagging skin remains. This results in the jowls being more pronounced than before. It is rare to have a child or young adult with this problem, though it has happened, and some babies have it. This fat face problem is more of a problem of age. However, knowing about it when you're young can help you prevent it from happening to you!
Preventing Jowls
Since jowls are a problem that comes with age and time, and comes naturally to everyone, the best way to fix the problem is to never allow it to occur. We do this through steady facial exercises which strengthen the platysma muscle, and starting these exercises young. If we do neck exercises (whether or not we have a double chin) then we strengthen our platysma muscle and prolong its elasticity. In many cases, the muscle stays strong well into our older years.
Having a strong platysma muscle with good elasticity will really benefit you because you will greatly lessen the chance that the skin in your jaw area will sag until much later. This will be really effective if you also maintain your skin elasticity through moisturizing creams and a good diet. What's more is that steady exercises will lessen the amount of fat underneath your jawline, further preventing the possible development of jowls.
