Plastic surgery for your cheeks in order to remove larger amounts of fat than what liposuction can is also possible. This type of surgery is called buccal fat removal, named so because the fat layers in the lower parts of our cheeks are known as buccal fat. This procedure takes around an hour or so, depending how much fat needs to be removed. What the surgeon does is make an incision between the cheek and gums and slowly squeezes the fat out of the cheeks by applying outside pressure to the face, near the cheekbones. Eliminating this fat gives the cheeks a more contoured look. Like liposuction, this has quick results, but there is a recovery time for the procedure.
Another method used to give the cheeks a more contoured look is to have cheekbone surgery to enhance your cheekbones. You have the choice of getting cheekbone implants, which are hard silicone implants that will permanently be in your cheeks, giving you the high cheekbone, contoured cheeks look. Another choice is to have some of your back teeth removed. Sometimes this works in enhancing your cheekbones. There are some tricks to giving you a high‐cheekbone‐slim‐cheek look without this surgery, though, and these will be discussed in the next articles.
Before choosing to have liposuction done or to undergo buccal fat removal surgery or to have cheekbone implants put in, it is best that you do your research regarding these procedures. Remember that this is still surgery, and is still invasive on your body. Most doctors will recommend that you stay away from invasive surgery for as long as needed. Some things to consider before going into either of these procedures are the side effects of the procedure. Do your own research on what the possible side effects could be.
Ask yourself: will it leave scars behind? This is important if your skin scars easily. Buccal fat removal is known to leave some scars behind, whereas liposuction does not. You should also consider your allergies. If you are known to be allergic to anesthesia, would you really rather take the risk of surgery than simply exercising your cheeks? Do your research on recovery periods and see if this amount of time is acceptable to you.
Finally, make sure you do your research on your plastic surgeon. It is important that you are well acquainted with the person who will be performing the surgery. If you know of other people who have been this person's patient, ask them for a few minutes of their time and see if they were happy with the results. Remember that all these surgeries will require you to do follow up checks with your surgeon, and often you will have to do some maintenance work (this can be diet, exercise, or future surgeries) depending on what is recommended by your doctors. Make sure you know all the details before you make the decision so you are sure that you are making an informed choice.
